Project Title: The Development of an Information Repository for Microbial Genome Comparisons using a Parallel Object Based Architecture (MicroBase)
Department/University School of Computing Science, University of Newcastle upon Tyne
  Investigators Dr. Anil Wipat
Project Description The overall aim of the proposed work is to develop a Grid-enabled information repository that will support microbial genome comparisons for use by the bioinformatics community and that will serve as a test-bed bioinformatics application for a new scalable, parallel computing architecture. The specific objectives by which we hope to achieve the above aim are:

To develop an object-oriented information model that wil store the combined results of pair-wise microbial genome alignments and protein sequence comparisons generated by parallelised algorithms.

To establish a novel computing architecture that will support parallel computations on the very large datasets that result; and

To combine objectives (1) and (2) to produce and evaluate a system that will allow custom microbial genome comparison queries to be assembled remotely by a user and sent in the form of an agent over the Internet or Grid for execution in a high performance environment.
